Ten miles north of the ranch community is Hillsboro, a peaceful village with about a hundred residents, including artists, writers, musicians, and ranchers. Old cottonwoods line the main street and there are several historic buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s. The General Store Café serves great breakfasts, lunches, and homemade pies all week long. Sue’s Antiques is another nice shop selling antiques and thrifts.There is an active community center and library in Hillsboro hosting music, art, and speaking events. The Hillsboro Historical Society has a small museum and gift shop in the center of town. If you play tennis, there is a group that meets year round twice a week at the community court. The first Saturday of December the community has a pre-Christmas celebration, Christmas In the Foothills. There are no gas or grocery stops in Hillsboro. From Berrenda Creek and Lake Valley ranch community residents head for services at Truth or Consequences, Deming and Hatch.
